Liverpool TAFE was a great institution to study at, teachers were very helpful, classes were flexible, but the general administration was very slow and unhelpful most of the time, so my experience was not awesome, just very good. Whenever I needed to get anything done by the administration I'd have to join unending queues (specially round the beginning of the semester) which would not move AT ALL for the longest time. Plus, you'd always have to wait WEEKS to get anything processed with them, so you knew that if you needed Administration you would have to arm yourself with alot of patience. VERY annoying, and the worst memory of the whole experience, which has simply tainted the overall good experience I did have there.
Easy to fill in paperwork, no real assistance, but very easy to understand. To get in you had to be selected (only for courses with higher demand, there are lots of courses that only open applications a month even weeks before the start of the semester), so you had to apply a few months in advance to the end of the previous semester. I think the best advice is to take your time to find out about the application process (I had asked about it at the beginning of the year, and I started in the second semester), get any needed paperwork ready, and BE SURE of you really want to do the course you've selected.
I honestly didn't find any available scholarships, then again I didn't need it, as Centrelink paid for my course (I was on Austudy).
Accounting is kind of dull, but you have to sincerely like it to be in it. The best bits? Maybe the diversity of subjects, as you see administration, tax, finance and of course accounting, and I'd also mention the fact that, unlike at university, the class is actually together during the whole experience, so you know everyone, not just your own little group. I'd have 20 hrs of classes a week (minimum to be paid by Centrelink) and at home maybe an extra few hours a day to do homework. For study support I had a study group, so I did receive the support I needed (not exactly from TAFE, but still there). Value for money? I think so! Especially if you didn't pay for it... The books though, VERY expensive, almost as expensive as university books, so maybe in that sense it seems like a large investment, but an investment worthwhile I think.
Facilities are good, and the fact that it was close to home made the "local area" even more appealing. My fellow students were very friendly, we were a close knit group from beginning until the end. It was very easy to keep a part time job while at TAFE, did it during the whole time I was there, unlike at university, which is much more time demanding. The Student Union was very handy and always there in their office. I didn't join any clubs or societies though.
My job prospects definitely did increase, as I came from overseas and without my Adv Dipl I probably would've found it much harder to work. I have kept in touch with a few of my ex-classmates, however (as far as I know) there is no alumni association to join. I've completed the course, and have since started doing my Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting at Macquarie University. As I didn't have a UAI, I entered thanks to my Advanced Diploma.
